An incoming electron (from left) interacts with a strong electromagnetic field, thereby forming an electron-positron pair. The two new particles are created by converting the incoming electron’s kinetic energy to mass, in accordance with Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2.

The doctorate was conferred on Ulrik Ingerslev Uggerhøj for his doctoral dissertation on ultrarelativistic particles in matter, which he defended on 7 October 2011.
