Accurate distance measurements in proteins – to improve structure determination

PhD defence, 24 May 2012, MSc Lasse Arnt Straasø. During his studies, Lasse Arnt Straasø developed new techniques for measuring distances accurately in proteins, particularly as fibrils. Fibrils originate in misfoldings of proteins and are, for stance, found to be involved in Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes II, and Creuzfeld-Jacobs disease.

Reza Sohbati OSL profiles in rock surfaces from Canyonlands National Park. According to the model, a longer exposure time would lead to the luminescence signal being zeroed deeper in the rock. By using data from a rock surface with a known exposure time of 80 years (road cut), it was possible to determine the exposure ages of two other rock surfaces, one of which is an important style in North American rock paintings.
